We're interested in everyone's feedback. Is an awareness campaign enough? Once people are aware, they want to DO something. What should that something be?
- We have discussed starting a "Ban the Box" campaign, asking employers to eliminate the box on job applications that has to be checked if you're a felon.
- We've talked about establishing a mentor program, where ex-offenders who have successfully transitioned back into society would mentor guys coming out of prison.
I think all of the ideas posted are good ideas. Awareness needs to be raised but, along with awareness, needs to come more opportunities for our Black men and women. I also believe the box on applications concerning convicted felons should be eliminated but also the label of 'convicted felon' should be delayed until those coming out of prison can prove or disprove themselves in society. The rights that are taken away from those who have been convicted of a crime should be restored to them once they are out of prison.
